Boston Rain

Boston Rain Despite being the middle of winter, on Friday the entire Boston area ended up getting drenched in an unexpected deluge of rain. Yes, you read that right: rain. And whenever I see those first flakes falling from the sky, I wont deny that I always took a certain pleasure in running around trying to taste a few. Which makes me sound like a fifth-grader, but its true, so there you go. Rain, on the other hand, just gets everybody wet. Including me. Normally, I wouldnt really mind a little rain, because like most people I kept a pretty good pair of rain boots in my dorm room, not to mention three (count em) umbrellas. In case youre curious, and Im sure you are (not), I brought one from home, and I ended up buying the other two from LaVerdes MITs on-campus mini-mart, basically during the fall term when it spontaneously started raining during the day. Unfortunately, my excess of umbrellas was of no help to me Friday, because I wasnt in my dorm room last night. Instead, I was at my fraternity. In the interest of full disclosure, I should point out (for the parents sake, if nothing else) that all MIT students live in dormitories for their entire freshman year, regardless of whether they join any particular fraternity, sorority, or other independent living group. And in spite of being part of MITs exceptionally vibrant Greek community, Im as proud to live in Simmons Hall as any other Sim its simply that Im part of another living group in addition to Simmons. And because its IAP, I decided to take advantage of all the free time (well, more free time than Im used to, anyway) by spending a few nights over at the fraternity house. Unfortunately, since it is supposedly the middle of winter, I didnt think to bring one of my umbrellas along with me. Even so, the rain ordinarily wouldnt have been a big deal, since MITs tunnel system makes getting around campus while staying dry a pretty simple endeavor. Friday, however, was not an ordinary day and my destination was somewhere even MITs most distant tunnels couldnt reach. While I could simply tell you my story in normal, everyday prose, I decided that itd be far more amusing to do so in song. The Cask of Amontillado is an Edgar Allen Poe short story that was published in 1847. The story opens to Montressor narrating to an unknown audience he is familiar with. Even as he describes his vision for revenge his thought seems scattered, saying he must have revenge without being punished himself and must inflict a significant enough pain as to actually ensure Fortunato feels it. Upon first meeting Fortunato he states, I was so pleased to see him that I thought I should never have done wringing his hand.(Poe 4). Upon the first mention of the pipe of Amontillado Montresor tells Fortunato he is headed to find Luchresi a fellow wine drinker to help determine if the Amontillado (a high-quality wine found at a good price during this time of festival season) is indeed what he purchased or if he has been taken advantage of. There would be no way to know for sure that Fortunato would first decide to help Montresor telling him that Luchresi wouldnt know the difference. At this point Montresor tells Fortunato that he could not impose, he has many places to go and a bad cough. The catacombs Montresor explains are filled with nitre and are damp which will aggravate Fortunators cough. Fortunato presses and insists. Two more times in the catacombs Montresor pleads with Fortunato to turn back and save his health. On the second occasion Montresor explains that people will miss Fortunato, that he is a wealthy and loved man like Montresor was. Is Montresorrs fall from power and wealth the reason he has gone mad? In another act or recklessness while toasting with wine Fortunato makes a gesture with the bottle and asks if Montresor is a Mason and asks for a sign that he is a Mason. Incredibly Montresor shows him a trowel, a tool he will later use to entomb Fortunato. It can only be assumed the Fortunato is very intoxicated at this point because he thinks nothing of the trowel and why somebody might be carrying it. At the end of the story we are told nobody has disturbed the tomb for at least 50 years. This tells us that Montresor might be returning to the scene of the crime to admire his work or see if he has been found. At the end of our story we find Montresor is walling up the tomb and upon hearing Fortunators screams, frantic attempts to escape, and pleading for release Montresor takes his time to appreciate this, taunting back, and yelling loud then even Fortunato. Surely only someone who has absolutely lost his mind would take this kind of pleasure in such a task. In light of these things it is quite reasonable to believe that Montresor is mad. Montresor never points to any actual offense that has happened and Fortunato does not seem to be aware of any wrong doing. If Fortunato had wronged Montresor as much as is claimed there is a strong possibility he would know and be suspicious. Montresor also does not keep clear thoughts on his feelings towards Fortunato moment to moment we see that he is described as a drunk, then next he is being admired for his ability to discern wines. This also makes it appear as though he himself might not be convinced that he should go through with his plan. We also find that Montresor gives Fortunato many chances to escape his own doom. This again shows that he does not seem completely decided about his course of action or it has become a type of game. Next, we see the Montresor in a very bold move takes out the trowel he plans to entomb Fortunato with and shows it to him telling him he is a Mason. Finally, we know Montresor has checked in on his work when he tells us the site has not been tampered with for 50 years. Many deranged criminals will return to the scene of the crime to admire their work. Poe tells a great story about a mad man who takes a manrs life in a sadistic way.

The five personality traits are used to understand the relationship between the behaviours and personality. The five traits of the Costa McCrae Big Five Personality Traits are: Openness: this trait describes the degree of curiosity, novelty preferences, creativity and the preferences of variety. Conscientiousness: this trait is a tendency for showing the self discipline, act dutifully and have aim towards achievement. It also refers to the planning, dependability and organizing in a better way. Extraversion: the trait describes the energy, sociability, showing positive emotions, assertiveness, talkativeness and the seeking stimulation from others. Agreeableness: this trait shows a compassionate and a cooperative relation towards others, not the suspicious and antagonistic nature. McClelland Needs Analysis The McClelland theory of acquired needs, also known as the three need theory or the learned theory of needs, avoids the situations of both low and high risks. The following three classifications of needs influences the motivation and effectiveness in the individuals certain job functions. The achievers prefer working alone or with other high achievers. The test analyzes the scores for the each needs of achievement, affiliation and power. The theory implies that people with the different needs are motivated differently, the achievers with high need for achievement take very challenging projects to reach the desired goals. The feedback should be provided to them so that they gain effective motivation. The achievers for high need for affiliation shows the best performance in the cooperative environment and the high need for power seeks the opportunity to manage others (NetMBA, 2010). Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument The conflict is the natural part of interaction, this is because no two individuals have exactly the same expectations and desires. The Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument is a self scoring that is done in fifteen minutes, it has been very useful in conflict resolution assessment for more than thirty years.It measures the behaviour of the person in the conflict situation. It can be described along two dimensions, assertiveness and cooperativeness. There are five modes of responding to the conflict situation of the two dimension of behaviour, these five modes are: Competing: it is assertive and uncooperative, it is a power oriented mode, in this mode the person uses whatever power is appropriate for winning the position, the arguing ability of the person, the rank a person holds and the economic sanctions. Competing is, standing for rights, defending for a position and trying to win. Accommodating: it is unassertive and cooperative, it is completely different from competing, in this mode an individual neglects to satisfy his concerns and keeps a concern about others. Avoiding: the mode avoiding is unassertive and uncooperative, in this mode the individual is concerned about himself or herself and not of others, thus the individual does not deal with the conflict. Collaborating: this mode is both assertive and cooperative, it is totally different from avoiding, it involves the attempt of working with others to extract some solutions that would satisfy the concern. Collaborating is a form of exploring the disagreement, finding a solution to an interpersonal problem. Compromising: this mode is moderate to both assertiveness and cooperativeness, in this mode a mutual solution is acknowledged so that it satisfies the concern of both the parties. The leaders and the managers are not born but they are made, a good leader and a manager is one that has a good knowledge, experiences, patience, skills, commitment and the increases others for the achievement of the goals.
